Brief...Our book feature for this week is titled Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking.Recommended Peter Richmond, CEO of Temi Construction.
Brief Synopsis: The author describes the main subject of his book as "thin-slicing": our ability to use limited information from a very narrow period of experience to come to a conclusion.This idea suggests that spontaneous decisions are often as good as—or even better than—carefully planned and considered ones. To reinforce his ideas, Gladwell draws from a wide range of examples from science and medicine (including malpractice suits), sales and advertising, gambling, speed dating (and predicting divorce), tennis, military war games, and the movies and popular music. Gladwell also uses many examples of regular people's experiences with "thin-slicing," including our instinctive ability to mind-read, which is how we can get to know a person's emotions just by looking at his or her face
Reason why the book is recommended for Hardhat Professionals;
So many times in our lives we are presented with opportunities or we are faced with seemingly insurmountable decisions and we don’t listen to ‘our gut feeling’. This is ignored or not recognised. This book discusses, in essence, the immediate ability we have to understand or determine our path in tackling the issue or conundrum. Thus the title ‘Blink’. In the time it takes for you to blink your eye is exactly the time it takes for you get the gut-feeling of the correct action to take. How many times have you looked at someone and known immediately whether you would welcome them into your circle or not? A friend comes up to you offering an amazing deal and you feel this immediate shudder or distaste for the proposal. Remember the feeling. In 6 months-time when he or she is still trying to wear you down, remember your first instincts, your ‘Blink’. Trust your gut-instinct. It is hardly ever wrong. If it felt right or wrong then, it won’t have change by now! Show more
